Chapter 17
Everly
Not long after Iâd texted Seth and told him to level with his family if he wanted to, lyrics started coming to me. Sexy, sensual lyrics. There was no question what had inspired them.
Iâd scanned the apartment for a notebook, but of course, there wasnât one. Iâd powered up my phone to dictate the words before I lost them, and once the initial word storm was on my Notes app, I downloaded a songwriting app, because a melody was coming with the words. A gift from the music gods, and itâd been so long since Iâd tried to compose anything that I was terrified Iâd lose it all before I could get it on my phone. My caution about keeping my phone off was waning, but I still kept my ringer silenced.
Iâd strummed Sethâs guitar as I worked out the tune to go with the lyrics, and it took almost no time at all to get four lines down. Itâd taken me longer to figure out how to use the app than it did to create the first verse.
The lyrics were sexier than anything Iâd ever written. Not surprising considering Iâd been a teenager when Iâd last focused on songwriting. In the ten to twelve years since, Iâd sung other peopleâs creations and gotten so busy I hadnât taken the time to create.
It felt amazing to create. Even just a single stanza of a single song.
I was strumming it again, singing quietly, when there was a knock on the door.
With my heart racing, I set the guitar aside and crept to the entry, trying to be so quiet that no one would be able to hear that I was in here. When I peeked out the peephole, I saw a woman I recognized as Sethâs sister, based on the glimpse Iâd had of her out the window when Seth had left. Though I hadnât had a good view of her, her shirt was an apple-green color that was easy to identify.
I debated for about two heartbeats, and in the end, part of what drove me to open the door was curiosity. I wanted to know someone close to Seth. Meeting Hayden would give me insight into him.
Truly, after our night together, he seemed too good to be true. All the more reason to carry on with our intentions of having a fantastic month together and then moving on.
I opened the door about a footâenough to be welcoming but not enough for people to see in easily if they happened to be around.
âHi,â I said.
âHi, Everly. Iâm Hayden, Sethâs sister. I brought you some muffins and wanted to introduce myself. My brother swore us to secrecy.â She held out a simple black earthenware plate with a blue rim. It was covered with plastic wrap, and beneath the wrap, two large muffins were visible. âIf Iâm intruding, just tell me.â
âCome in,â I said without hesitation. This woman was instantly likable, plus sheâd brought scrumptious-looking muffins. She was pretty, with a happy
